“Instinct leads me to another flow
Every time I hear a brother call a girl a bitch or a hoe
Trying to make a sister feel low
You know all of that gots to go” ~
Queen Latifah

These are lyrics from Queen Latifah’s 1994 single “U.N.I.T.Y” which spoke out against the disrespect of women in society and slurs against women in hip-hop culture. Back in the early 90’s and in decades prior calling a woman a bitch was an ultimate form of disrespect. Today for some people the word bitch has turned into a term of empowerment specifically for African American women.
photo__19_-e1345666437445  In early 2000 the phrase “bad bitch” was coined which is used to refer to a beautiful female with a nice body who is successful and independent. Many females gladly accept the title of being a bad bitch but I’m just not one of them. Why do black people always have to turn something positive into something negative? Why can’t men just say baby, you look beautiful or baby, you are bad!? Why does the word bitch even have to be used?
A few months ago rapper Kanye West released a track called “My Perfect Bitch” which he dedicated to his soon to be baby mama Kim Kardashian. Not a surprise Kim’s response to the song was that she was honored to be his bad bitch. I’m not going to lie when I was in college I used to dance my butt off to Webbie’s rap song “Bad Bitch.” Now that I’m older I am more conscious about what type of music I listen to and the message behind the music.
A couple of months ago rapper Lupe Fiasco released a track called “Bad Bitch” which explores how the term may affect people differently depending on their circumstances specifically young children.

Check out the thought provoking music video for the song below!

Personally I don’t see a difference between “bitch” and “bad bitch.” Either way you say it when you look up the word bitch in the dictionary it is defined as a female dog and I am not dog! Ladies, have some class and respect for yourselves! Don’t let a man degrade you by calling you out your name because chances are if he calls you a bitch he doesn’t have much respect for you anyway!
